The Power of Place

In the world of travel, few names carry as much influence as the MICHELIN Guide. For more than a century it has shaped how travellers discover exceptional restaurants and destinations. Recently, that same discerning lens expanded to hospitality with the introduction of the MICHELIN Keys, recognising hotels that deliver truly outstanding experiences.

For Kruger Shalati – The Train on the Bridge, being awarded Two MICHELIN Keys in 2025 is more than a milestone. It places the property among a select group of hotels globally recognised for exceptional character, design, service, and connection to place.

In the inaugural MICHELIN Keys selection for South Africa, just 27 hotels and safari lodges received recognition. Among them, Kruger Shalati stands as the only property within the Kruger National Park to receive Two Keys, highlighting the uniqueness of the experience offered here.

Part of what makes Kruger Shalati so remarkable lies in its setting. Suspended above the Sabie River on the historic Selati Bridge, the train’s beautifully designed carriage suites echo the early days of travel to the Kruger National Park, when visitors slept in railway carriages stationed on this very bridge. That heritage, dating back to the park’s founding in 1926, now meets contemporary African design and modern luxury.

Yet the recognition goes beyond architecture and location. The experience is shaped by the people and stories behind it. Through initiatives such as Pillars of Hope, the property prioritises community partnerships, local sourcing, and employment opportunities in neighbouring communities.

“Receiving Two MICHELIN Keys is an incredible honour,” says General Manager Gavin Ferreira. “But what makes it meaningful is that it reflects the passion of our team and the spirit of the place we are privileged to share with our guests.”

The same sense of connection carries through to the culinary philosophy of Kruger Kitchen, led by Executive Chef Vusi Mbatha, where seasonal ingredients and regional inspiration celebrate the landscape surrounding the lodge.

“For us, every dish tells a story about the land and the people who shape it,” says Chef Mbatha.

As Kruger National Park approaches its centenary in May 2026, the recognition places Kruger Shalati firmly on the global stage. More than a luxury stay, it is an experience rooted in history, wilderness, and the human stories that bring it to life.

And now, with Two MICHELIN Keys, the world is taking notice.
